UTF8 character turns into a '?'

We’re using a field_type ‘text’ for a custom People field. When updating the value through the API the UTF8 smileys are changed to value ‘?’ . Is this a bug? I have confirmed that the correct value is being sent.

Also, when editing the record via the Pipedrive UI it’s possible to type a smiley. (:blush:).
