We have created a private App with a custom panel for person details. When I try to test-install it to our sandbox, I click on the allow button and the site is going to the callback page. After that, nothing happens. The callback page is doing nothing right now, returns a sample string with status code OK, but I expected the custom panel to appear after that step, which is not the case.

It’s probably a bit hard to help you debug with the current information.
It might help if you could share more detailed information about each step of the flow, what you expect to happen and where you get stuck…
I managed now to install the app, after I returned a valid token, generated by our backend
